Just the mention of the three letters ISO strikes fear into the heart of many organisational / business owners

Q: why?

A: misunderstanding.

Most believe it is a mass of unnecessary documents that don’t help to run a business, in most instances, they would be right!

The ISO machine i.e. large web based implementation businesses put a mass of useless documents that are supposed to make the process easy, unfortunately this garbage floats around on business servers and in dusty lever arch files and becomes the mass of unnecessary documents the business owners think it is.

The one thing all business have in common is the desire to be the best, this means providing a certain quality of  service, quality or product, competitive pricing and development, so why wouldn’t a business be interested in applying ISO 9001 because this the very subject it deals with.

The ISO 9001 standard says:

The adoption of a quality management system is a strategic decision for an organization that can help to improve its overall performance and provide a sound basis for sustainable development initiatives.

The word “Quality” can mislead as it brings to mind something tangible, the look or feel of a product possibly. The above statement defines it so much more, strategic direction, overall performance and sustainable development so therefore, quality management is actually Business Management.

Let’s take a step back apply apply a new thought process:

Within the pages of ISO 9001 we have without doubt the best, most well planned and evaluated business plan the world has ever seen.

ISO 9001 simply breaks down the requirements needed to create the success of an organisation.

Let’s imagine a couple of fictional organisations, one is two people who work from a shed in their back garden. The other is a global manufacturer of aerospace parts.

ISO 9001 can be applied to both organisations equally well because within its 19 pages and 10 clauses it defines how both these organisations can attain success. The reason for this is the use of the term “Context of the organisation” what it has done is said “Hey we understand that not all organisations are the same” and as the organisations purpose doesn’t have to be treated as being the same, we now have the degree of flexibility we need to implement this standard into each of these businesses.

When considering how to meet the requirements of ISO 9001 we must understand that the standard itself does not actually tell any organisation what to do. What the standard does is tell you what you need to do without telling you how to do it. How you meet the requirements it is completely 100% up to your organisation, this can easily be referenced within the introduction to the standard;

It is not the intent of this International Standard (ISO 9001:2015) to imply the need for:
— uniformity in the structure of different quality management systems;
— alignment of documentation to the clause structure of this International Standard;
— the use of the specific terminology of this International Standard within the organization.
The quality management system requirements specified in this International Standard are complementary to requirements for products and services.
